Back in 2004, Seattle Public Schools were at the forefront of banning corporate advertising from their school grounds. Now, it’s back to the drawing board as shrinking budgets and rising expenditures prompt administrators to think of new ways to raise funds and balance budgets.
Do you think corporate advertising should be present in and around school property? Some have mixed opinions on the issue.
Proponents of corporate advertising say it’s a win-win situation – schools receive generous revenue for featuring a corporate sponsor’s ad on campus, while those in opposition feel it sends the wrong message to students. Regardless of opinion, the ads understandably have to be appropriate to K-12 students.
If the notion is passed, administrators have said that ads would be near sports fields and on school calendars. Some athletic companies have already expressed interest in purchasing ad space.
